What is GMX? It’s the Geek Media Expo held in Nashville, Tennessee! This years event was filled with sci-fi, anime, paranormal, horror, comics, gaming, music, and more! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many different, unusual, and original activities crammed into a 3-day event. Just looking at the schedule was exhausting!

ABOVE: Brandon O'Rear hangs out with the ladies.

The show began on Friday afternoon with a slow ramp up to what was to be an explosion of activity over the life of the event. The exhibition hall / celebrity room opened up first, giving the attendees a chance to shop for various items from the vendors and meet a variety of celebrities, including John Wesley Shipp (THE FLASH, DAWSON’S CREEK), teen pop sensation Tiffany (MEGA PIRANHA, JETSONS: THE MOVIE), Jackson Bostwick (SHAZAM, TRON), Patricia Albrecht and Samantha Newark (JEM), Sonya Thompson and Larry Mainland (THE WALKING DEAD), Daniel Taylor (RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING), Mike Holman (JACKASS), Ellen McLain (PORTAL), Bryson Kanouse (PSYCHIC KIDS), and many more.
ABOVE: Bryan Wilson, Samantha Newark (JEM), Tiffany (MEGA PIRANHA), Patricia Albrecht (JEM), and Jim O'Rear.

A few hours later, opening ceremonies took place then the show was off and running with a variety of events that included a comedy showcase, a CD release party with Samantha Newark, art competitions, educational panels, and 80’s dance party with Tiffany, and a sneak peek screening of UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT: THE MOVIE!

With so many activities to choose from, I was surprised that we had an audience for the UNDERGROUND film screening. Bryan and I want to thank everyone who attended the screening. We appreciate all of the kind comments you had afterwards.

The show closed for the day at 2am and picked up again at 9am. Apparently geeks don’t sleep, though, because there were a variety of room parties going on after hours. I found that geeks also take their partying seriously. There were room parties with food, drinks, pumping sound systems, disco lights, decorations… you name it. This con actually has a room party contest, so the attendees were going all out. I’m not sure when they slept, but the doors opened to a ton of people Saturday morning.

ABOVE: Jackson Bostwick (SHAZAM, TRON) gets "The Treatment" from Jim O'Rear & Bryan Wilson.

The Saturday schedule was packed. Bryan and I had panels to do on the paranormal and screenwriting and we were guest judges at the Jedi Obstacle Course. There were Q&As, a live-action Angry Birds contest, how-to horror makeup demonstrations, costume contests, video games, pin up girl contests, and much more.

Bryan and I want to give a big thank you to our friend Joe Webb for coming to see us and delivering us snacks and lunch. Joe is one of the nicest, most caring guys we’ve met in a long, long time. Thanks, Joe!!

Saturday brought on a surprise appearance from the Trinity Of Pain, who made the rounds and caused havoc as they spread their twisted wisdom across the con. No one is safe when these guys show up.
ABOVE: Mike Holman (JACKASS) is questioned about a particular lady garment that was found in his possession.

The Trinity got a taste of their own medicine, however, when they found out about a convent full of Nuns that was located across the street from the hotel and decided to take a trip over there to pick up dates. Needless to say, the Nuns didn’t think it was funny and the guys were busted. It’s okay, though, because later that night two members of the Trinity found Jesus and gave him "The Treatment."

It was great catching up with old friends and meeting new ones as the flurry of activity passed by at a rapid pace. Before we knew it, 2am was upon us and it was time for the show to wind down again.

ABOVE: Bryan Wilson & Jim O'Rear check out the steampunk display featuring The Fonz jumping the shark.

The show picked back up again at 9am. Surely, after two long nights of partying, there would be no one awake to attend our paranormal panel that was scheduled first thing in the morning. How wrong we were, though. Bryan and I were joined by investigators Judi Swan, Tammy Luthi-Retzlaff, and Bryson Kanouse (PSYCHIC KIDS) for a fun Q&A. It was a small audience, but more than I expected that early on a Sunday morning.

More events, panels, and games took place throughout the day until 5pm came and it was time to say goodbye. We want to thank Jeremy Miller and all of the staff at GMX who took care of us over the weekend. We had a blast and hope to return to GMX in 2012!

Gatlinburg, Tennessee, knows how to get their horror groove on! I’m talking about the most-excellent HORRORWEEKEND, that took place September 30 – October 2. Horror stars and horror fans flocked to the Gatlinburg Convention Center to take part in a variety of events, film screenings, Q&As, and parties. The promoters of this event, Jennifer Black and Adam Phelps, really took great care of us as guests and gave the fans just what they wanted. I have so many nice things to say about this show, but I’ll try to keep the words brief and use lots of pictures!

Bryan Wilson and I arrived early to check in and get our table set up. While walking to the convention center we ran into our old friend J. LaRose (SAW 3, INSIDIOUS) and took a few minutes to catch up and discuss one of his favorite subjects… beer! Arriving at the convention center we saw that LaRose was going to be seated right behind us, but that changed when the promoter moved him three tables down from us. J said it was because we were "too ass-grabby." Apparently, he is all too familiar with "The Treatment." (J, of course, was making a joke…he actually loves it when we grab his ass!)

The official event kicked off Friday night at the Hard Rock Café for a special VIP Meet And Greet party. When Bryan and I arrived, our buddy Cernia Vincent (CABIN FEVER, NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE) was there to greet us with a big hug. We were soon joined by the lovely Monique Dupree (POST MORTEM AMERICA 2021) and her awesome husband Saint and after a few minutes we were ushered into a private room where we joined more friends such as Dick Warlock (HALLOWEEN 2), Felix Silla (ADDAMS FAMILY, BUCK ROGERS), Sid Haig (DEVIL’S REJECTS), Alex Vincent (CHILD’S PLAY), Doug Jones (HELLBOY, PAN’S LABYRINTH, SILVER SURFER), Camden Toy (BUFFY, ANGEL), Sonya Thompson (WALKING DEAD), Brian O’Halloran (CLERKS, DOGMA), Hanna Hall (FORREST GUMP, HALLOWEEN), and many more. The fans who purchased VIP tickets were let in and the party was on…complete with free food and drinks and a live performance by Radio Cult (an awesome group of musicians and darn fine people)!

This party was a blast….and we were treated to seeing Sonya Thompson bust a move! The Hard Rock provided us all with free T-Shirts and we all signed a guitar to be auctioned off to raise money for breast cancer. We have to thank the fine people and wait staff at Gatlinburg’s Hard Rock for all their hard work and participation in making this a fun event for everyone, especially Hillary and Jessica! Here’s a few photos from the event:

Saturday was filled with events such as a costume contest, a scream queen contest, Q&A panels, film screenings, and more.

As the day came to a close, Sid Haig asked if I would join him for dinner, along with a few other celebs. Sid is a great guy with TONS of fantastic stories…how could I NOT go? Sid, P.J. Soles, Ogre, and myself loaded up into a hearse that had been converted into a limo (with padded bench seating, a bar, and television sets playing episodes of THE MUNSTERS) and headed to a steakhouse to meet up with J. LaRose, Diamond Dallas Page, and Monique and Saint. Always the gracious host, Sid invited our limo driver inside to have dinner with us. Unfortunately, Bryan had to leave and fly to Ireland and missed out on a wonderful meal and time of fellowship with these great folks.

After dinner we were scheduled to make an appearance at Ole Smoky Moonshine (Tennessee's first legal moonshine distillery) where we were provided with all the tasty moonshine we wanted to drink and were given care packages to take home with us. Thank you to the owner for his hospitality!

From there we were rushed back to the Hard Rock for another VIP Meet & Greet party where Ari Lehman and his band, First Jason, rocked the house. Carl Donavan, a friend of Bryan and I from over 20 years ago, showed up with his lovely friend "Plucky" and joined me for the party. He had come in earlier that day to check out the con and to be around for the sneak screening of UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT, that was to be held the following day. I had not seen him in 20 years (he was around during the television years of UNDERGROUND) and it was great to catch up.

Sunday morning started a little slowly as people were fighting the effects of all the moonshine the night before, but it didn’t take long for things to come to life. Although there were more Q&As, concerts, and film screenings (including Zac Parker’s fantastic new flick SCALENE, featuring Margo Martindale, Hanna Hall, and our good friend Jim Dougherty) the highlight of the day, for me personally, was the sneak peek screening of UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT.

ABOVE: Black Bears love UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT.

The reaction of the attendees after the screening was fantastic, including people thanking us for making the film (as it touched the fan geek inside of them), people asking if we would please release a boxed set of the original television episodes, and the return of the shows tag line being uttered from people’s mouths, "Underground Entertainment doesn’t suck!" It was a surreal moment to hear several people saying that tag line after not hearing since the television days 20 years ago. Bryan and I thank those who came to see it and thank everyone for your acceptance of this screwball comedy which shares a small piece our lives.

Bryan and I just returned home for a couple of days and wanted to drop you a quick note. Thank you to everyone involved in the process of UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT: THE MOVIE being screened at THE SCAREFEST in Lexington, KY, this weekend… especially Nic & Fiona Brown, Jeff Waldridge, and Cherokee Hall… and thanks to those who attended the screening and had such kind comments afterwards. A short video of some of these funny testimonials will be coming soon!

After the sneak screening of UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT, Bryan and I had to run to Indianapolis, IN, to appear at a benefit concert for the Make A Wish Fund. Bryan played with FOREVER THE TRIBUTE (a Beatles tribute band) and brought down the house.

Bryan and I travelled quickly through Indiana. Since we were recently banned in Franklin, IN, due to our film UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT being too controversial for them, we weren’t sure what law offices might be out to get us. However, we did stop long enough in Franklin to snap this photo:

Thousands of dollars were raised at this benefit concert to help sick kids and Bryan and I were proud to be a part of this event. We don’t know that everyone was as proud, though, when a 5th Beatle was put on the stage!

We’re in Gatlinburg, TN, this week for HORROR WEEKEND (www.HorrorWeekend.com) appearing with a ton of genre stars and holding another sneak peek screening of UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT. We hope to see you there!!

The true spirit of independent film is alive and well!

We’d like to make a few big announcements! First, though, we want to thank everyone for the loads and loads of support, articles, videos, and everything else that you have done in the wake of the recent censorship and banning issues surrounding our new film UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT: THE MOVIE. If you’ve missed out on the action, please scroll down our Facebook pages and, also, check out the movie website (www.UETheMovie.com) to get caught up on all of the scoop.

Your support has been overwhelming and interest in the film has continued to grow. We’ve been contacted by numerous locations wanting to screen the film and are in negotiations with distribution companies who want the public to see this movie. We have confirmed some future screenings, for those who have been asking when they’ll have a chance to see the film, and we have set a new World Theatrical Premiere date and location!

ABOVE: The ScareFest Horror & Paranormal Convention – Sept 23-25.

First up, we want to thank Nic and Fiona Brown and the fine folks at THE SCAREFEST horror and paranormal convention (Lexington, KY – www.ScareFestCon.com) for stepping in at the last minute when our long-confirmed theatrical premiere was cancelled by the closed-minded people behind the The B Movie Celebration. THE SCAREFEST just happened to be taking place the same weekend as our previously scheduled premiere, so they made time in their schedule to fit in a screening of the film as part of the convention on Friday night, Sept 23, at 9:30pm. This works out great because we’ve spoken to several celebrities about attending this screening and many will be able to attend with the fans. Some of those we’ve spoken with include Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN), John Dugan (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE), Beverly Randolph (RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD), James Hampton (SLING BLADE), horror artist Dick Star, Chad Morin (GHOST HUNT WEEKENDS), and more!

If you are unable to attend the screening at THE SCAREFEST, thanks to Jeremy Miller the movie will be included as part of the GMX Convention (Nashville, TN – www.GeekMediaExpo.com). We’re finalizing the exact night and time for this now, but it will be either Friday night, Oct 21, or Saturday night, Oct 22. Check their website for updated details or www.UETheMovie.com.

Now for the WORLD THEATRICAL PREMIERE news… UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT: THE MOVIE will have its World Theatrical Premiere on Friday, October 28th, in Anderson, Indiana (just outside of Indianapolis), at the beautiful and historic Paramount Theatre (www.AndersonParamount.org). This isn’t just a movie screening, though… it’s an EVENT! Check this out… Since it is Halloween weekend (the best weekend of the year), the Paramount will be screening the classic film CARNIVAL OF SOULS at 6pm, followed by a costume contest led by Joshua Hull (director and writer of BEVERLY LANE), followed by a screening of the zombie comedy BEVERLY LANE (which I am also a cast member of), followed by the costume contest awards ceremony, and then the World Theatrical Premiere of UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT at 9:30pm! Cast members from BEVERLY LANE, UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT, and other films will be in attendance. Bryan and I will also be filming, throughout the evening, segments for the UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT sequel (which covers our struggles against censorship and the banning of our film). So, if you want to have a lot of fun, see some cool flicks, and be a part of the next UNDERGROUND movie, definitely plan on being there!
We have a lot of people to thank for setting up this premiere for the fans. Thank you Joshua Hull and Jim Dougherty for organizing this event, thank you to the open-minded owners of the beautiful Paramount Theatre for allowing us to hold the event there, and thank you to our friend Lee Vervoort who cancelled the screening of his own film, GUN TOWN, so that UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT could be seen on that night. Please show your support of Lee for helping us out by purchasing a DVD of his film GUN TOWN from the movie’s website (www.GunTownTheMovie.com).

UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT: THE MOVIE will also be screened in Boston, MA, early next year as part of the Stiletto Film Festival. More details about this screening as well as the official DVD release will be coming soon as the final details are worked out!

Once again, thank you to everyone who has supported this movie and its recent stand against censorship. It has made it clearly visible to the public who those people are that truly support independent cinema and who those are who only pretend to support independent cinema. The spirit of the indie is alive and well and we’re proud to be a part of that community! We’re looking forward to meeting everyone at the screenings and having a blast at the official World Theatrical Premiere on October 28th!
Thank you,

ABOVE: UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT’s Jim O’Rear & Bryan Wilson.

For the past week, many have been following the story of the attempted censorship of our new all-star documentary, UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT: THE MOVIE… which, ironically, focuses on the topic of censorship. My business partner, Bryan Wilson, and I thought it was time to make an official statement concerning this and let the public know the strange details of the case and UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT’s future association with the B Movie Celebration and The Artcraft Theater.

I’ll try to keep this as brief and succinct as possible, because I’m sure you don’t want to read a book about this.

The B Movie Celebration, run by Bill Dever in Franklin, Indiana, promotes itself as a supporter of independent cinema and filmmakers, claiming a desire to advance the culture of independent movies that are made outside of the Hollywood system. But, apparently, that is only true if your film happens to also agree with their religious and moral beliefs.

I’ll start by saying this… I’ve been involved with the B Movie Celebration for the past five years. I was there from the start. Bryan and I love independent films and the people who make them. They’re edgier and make more of a statement than typical commercial Hollywood films.

Bryan and I were approached by Bill Dever several months ago. He really wanted the world theatrical premiere rights to screen our new documentary, UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT, at this year’s celebration. The film is about a television show Bryan and I created twenty years ago that broke a lot of ground for home genre entertainment. On this twenty year anniversary of the show, we set out to document our struggles with censorship and what could and could not be shown on television. Several top genre celebrities joined the film to pledge their support of the old show and give their testimonials concerning its impact on the world today… people like Robert “Freddy” Englund (NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN), Ernie Hudson (GHOSTBUSTERS), William Forsythe (THE DEVIL’S REJECTS), Tony Todd (CANDYMAN), Tom Savini (PLANET TERROR), Lloyd Kaufman (TROMA King), Mel Tillis (CANNONBALL RUN), Daniel Taylor (RETURN OF SWAMP THING), James Hampton (SLING BLADE), and many others.

We had offers to screen the world premiere at much larger events, but because I had been associated with the B Movie Celebration for the last five years we agreed to screen it there… with only one condition. The condition was that the movie screen on Saturday, September 24th, at the Historic Artcraft Theater. We were guaranteed, repeatedly by Bill Dever, that this would be done.

ABOVE: The Historic Artcraft Theater – Franklin, IN

After months of advertising the premiere, promoting the town of Franklin and the B Movie Celebration, and attendees purchasing plane tickets, rental cars, etc, to attend the screening, we received a call from Bill Dever on Monday stating that the Artcraft refuses to play an uncensored version of the film and that there’s nothing he could do but offer to screen the film inside an office with twenty-five chairs or outdoors inside a tent. Of course, neither of those choices is a realistic option for a “world premiere.”

When Bill was asked if he rents the Artcraft out for his event, his answer was “yes.” So, logically, as a renter of the venue, he should be able to screen any film that he wants to for his private event. I was informed that this wasn’t the case; that Rob, the owner of the Artcraft, had certain “beliefs” and that he wouldn’t screen the film in its current uncensored cut because of the “material” it contained. Again, ironic considering the film is about censorship. What “material” is so upsetting? It’s a documentary.

Well, excuse me, but we had a deal… and the deal was that U.E. would screen on Saturday at the Artcraft in exchange for us giving him the world theatrical premiere rights. There were no conditions that an independent film had to meet a certain religious code. I thought this celebration was set up to support the independent artists and further the culture of independent cinema, not to snuff out independent films that have a voice and something legitimate to say. This is the type of irrational behavior that religious fanatics, such as those of the Westboro Baptist Church, participate in as an attempt to step on people’s First Amendment rights and further their own agenda.

When I asked Bill why he didn’t just pull his rental money away from the Artcraft and screen his films somewhere else, his story suddenly changed. Now he informed us that the venue was, actually, rented using public funds by his friend… the mayor of Franklin, Fred Paris. Really? The mayor is misusing public funds to support his friend’s private film festival? Does the town of Franklin know about this?

You see, this now complicates matters even further because not only is this a blatant misuse of public funds but it now starts to infringe on another set of rights we are promised in America. Follow me here… Why is a politician using public funds to rent a non-religious venue whose owner is making decisions based on their religious beliefs to determine what the public is going to see at a private event? What happened to the separation of church and state? A state office is using the town’s public funds to impose their religious beliefs on people by censoring the films it wants you to see at a private event. Am I the only one that sees something incredibly wrong and unconstitutional about this?

ABOVE: UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT’s “Banned In Franklin” Poster.

Due to Bill Dever’s track record of less-than-accurate information, we contacted the mayor’s office to see if we could get more clarification and a statement on this matter. We left phone messages and sent emails directly to Fred Paris to allow him to comment on this misuse of public funds and the attempt of a public official’s rented venue to censor a film and impose personal religious beliefs on attendees, but he refused to respond. Sometimes silence speaks much louder than words, Mr. Paris.

As of this date, there has been no resolution to this matter. So, unfortunately for the people who have spent money and made plans to come see the promised screening of U.E. at the B Movie Celebration, this screening is not going to take place. We hope that Bill Dever and the B Movie Celebration have the morals, like the ones they are trying to impose on others, to honor any and all refund requests of those who are disappointed with this turn of events. Unfortunately, this doesn’t help with airline refunds, and such… but at least it’s something.

In addition, due to the convictions of Bryan and I and our spotless reputations in this industry, we cannot associate ourselves with an event that operates under shifty business practices and displays these types of blatant flaws in integrity. Not to mention one that wants to tiptoe on our First Amendment rights and try to impose their religious beliefs on others by censoring films they’ve invited to screen at their festival. Therefore, Bryan and I will NOT be attending the B Movie Celebration or their sister event The World Festival Of Scream Queens. Because of this, we have also been informed that other guests and filmmakers are pulling out of the event and will not be appearing, either. Just last night we also received emails from some advertised guests who stated they were “uninvited” to the event by Bill Dever and won’t be appearing. It now has us wondering, will ANYONE be there? We understand that these guest changes and our decision may cause other attendees, participants, and filmmakers to withdraw, also, who were looking forward to this. We apologize to those people and we appreciate your support in this matter.

Finally, the last word we heard from Bill Dever, in an Email, was that it was very possible that this entire event may be cancelled and not happen at all. So, with this in mind, make your weekend plans wisely. If we hear any additional info, we will let you know. We will also be scheduling a new world premiere screening of UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT: THE MOVIE at another event in the very near future.

Thank you,

Some of the highlights included a Q&A with actress and “Bond Girl” Virginia Hey (FARSCAPE, ROAD WARRIOR, THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS), a zombie makeup challenge, readings from author Peter Beagle (THE LAST UNICORN), a live murder mystery role playing experience, belly dancing lessons, Quidditch tournaments, live bands, and more. This flick, directed by the legendary Jim Wynorski (RETURN OF SWAMP THING, CHOPPING MALL), was filled with sea monsters, mermaids, and hunts for pirate treasure. The audience members inside the packed theater seemed to really enjoy themselves. The pre-movie and post-movie parties allowed cast, crew, and attendees to mingle and discuss the making of the film. Great food and fun! I’ve always loved the writings of Poe and am a huge fan of all the movie adaptations of his works (especially the Roger Corman / Vincent Price versions), so I was thrilled to hear I’d been selected to go to Los Angeles to play the role of Roderick Usher, alongside Kevin Sorbo (HERCULES, ANDROMEDA), John Billingsley (STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE, TRUE BLOOD), and Bonita Friedericy (CHUCK).

ABOVE: Tooling along through Hollywood.

Normally, I don’t enjoy flying great distances, but nothing about this trip was bad. I boarded the plane in Nashville, TN, and was pleased to see that I would be flying alongside the legendary Kris Kristofferson! Known for his years of chart-busting music hits and appearances on the silver screen in such films as BLADE, A STAR IS BORN, BIG TOP PEE WEE, CONVOY, and more, Kris was as cool of a guy as you’d ever want to meet.

ABOVE: There’s a plane inside my hotel!!

Getting to Los Angeles/Burbank, Kevin Herren of Macabre Mansion (www.MacabreMansion.com), producer/director of the USHER project, took me to my hotel, conveniently located only minutes from the airport and the studio! Not many people know that Daniel is an avid collector of monster and Halloween memorabilia… so avid, in fact, that he has an entire house behind his house set up as a museum. Needless to say, we jumped at the opportunity to check out his private collection, which includes genre-related costumes, props, figures, and toys from the 1950’s to present.

ABOVE: Daniel Roebuck (LOST, MATLOCK, THE FUGITIVE) and Jim O’Rear inside Dan’s personal monster museum.

ABOVE: Daniel Roebuck at home inside his museum office.

What a special treat it was to see all of Daniel’s mint collectibles and spend time in this very unique environment. This blurb is supposed to be about the awesome audio production of THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER project, coming out on CD next month from Macabre Mansion (www.MacabreMansion.com) just in time for Halloween! This project was a blast to work on. As I’ve already mentioned, Poe has always been one of my favorite authors and this was my first chance to immerse myself and become one of his characters.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear records dialogue as “Roderick Usher” for THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER.

For those unfamiliar with the work, THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in September 1839 in Burton's Gentleman's Magazine. It is considered to be Poe's most famous work of prose and is the best example of Poe's "totality," where every element and detail is related and relevant. This highly unsettling macabre work is also considered, by many, to be THE masterpiece of American Gothic literature.

ABOVE: Kevin Sorbo (HERCULES, ANDROMEDA) records dialogue for THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER.

In USHER, an unnamed protagonist (the Narrator – Kevin Sorbo) is summoned to the remote mansion of his boyhood friend, Roderick Usher (Jim O’Rear). Filled with a sense of dread by the sight of the house itself, the Narrator reunites with his old companion, who is suffering from a strange mental illness and whose sister Madeline (Bonita Friedericy) is near death due to a mysterious disease. The Narrator provides company to Usher while he spends all his days inside, avoiding the sunlight and obsessing over the sentence of the non-living. When Madeline dies, Usher decides to bury her temporarily in one of his house's large vaults. A few days later, however, she emerges from her provisional tomb…escalating the madness that surrounds Roderick and his friend to a deathly conclusion.

ABOVE: Bonita Friedericy (CHUCK) records dialogue as “Madeline” for THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER.

Featuring supernatural theatrics, which critics have interpreted a number of ways, the story exhibits Poe's concept of "art for art's sake," the idea that a story should be devoid of social, political, or moral teaching. In place of a moral, Poe creates a mood—terror, in this case— through his use of language.

ABOVE: John Billingsley (STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE, TRUE BLOOD) records dialogue as “The Doctor” for THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER.

It all equates to a cool story, cool actors, and a very cool audio-drama CD to add to your collection. I had appeared as a guest at this show in Indiana a few months ago and had a great time so I was looking forward to giving it a go in another state. Although this first-time Tennessee show was not extremely well attended, it was a loaded weekend of fun.

ABOVE: Jim takes every opportunity to show off his banner designed by the multi-talented Billy Tackett (www.BillyTackett.com).

Realizing that this was going to be the first show I had done in a long time that zombie artist Billy Tackett was not appearing at, as well, I slapped on the black-straw hat so that I could represent and headed out the door to set up.

ABOVE: James Hampton (SLING BLADE, TEEN WOLF), Jim O’Rear, & Ken Sagoes (NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3 & 4).

Arriving at the show, I was immediately greeted by legendary actor/director James Hampton (SLING BLADE, TEEN WOLF, F-TROOP) and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET alum Ken Sagoes. I had appeared at shows with these guys before but never had the opportunity to really talk to them for any length of time. I was glad to see that we were all sitting together so that we could spend some time chatting. Also sitting with me was UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT co-creator Bryan Wilson (whom would be working with me at the convention on filming more footage for UE: THE MOVIE) and the fine folks from MACABRE MANSION (www.MacabreMansion.com).

ABOVE: Daniel Emery Taylor (RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING) assumes his “Blister Taint” personality alongside Bryan Wilson.

Seated on my other side was my good friend and always hilarious Daniel Emery Taylor (RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING) and his lovely wife Ami. It didn’t take long for Daniel to slap on the patriotic mullet and shift into his crazy “Blister Taint” personality for some painfully funny moments of comedy. Of course, James Hampton… also an extremely funny actor… took every opportunity to join in the hijinks. These guys had me rolling on the floor with laughter.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear, paranormal investigator Brian Henry, and Bryan Wilson try to act like tough guys.

There were a ton of other guests, too, ranging from filmmakers (George Demick, Joshua Hull, Jim Dougherty, Tom Berdinski, & more) to horror hosts (Dr. Gangrene, Midnite Mausoleum, & more) to paranormal investigators (SyFy’s Keith Age, Paul Browning, & more) to independent film actors (David Polk, David Ross, DJ Mincy, & more). I moderated a panel about the film and it was as fun and wacky as the movie, itself. This is a really great group of people that I look forward to spending more time with in the future.

ABOVE: Bryan Wilson (UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT), paranormal investigator Paul Browning, and Jim O’Rear taking a break.

Since my friends from MACABRE MANSION were in the house we also fit in some new interviews for their website. This time around, Bryan Wilson and I discussed the upcoming UE: THE MOVIE and GHOSTS OF TENNESSEE documentary that we are producing and Daniel Taylor and I sat down to talk about his new film FAT CHANCE. Of course, as usual, the interviews were fun and irreverent.

ABOVE: Bryan Wilson & Jim O’Rear discuss UE: THE MOVIE for MACABRE MANSION.

ABOVE: Daniel Taylor is interviewed by Jim O’Rear for MACABRE MANSION.

Other fun over the weekend included jumping in the Spiderman bouncy room with zombies, shopping for cool stuff from the multiple vendors, and a surprise appearance by the Trinity Of Pain.

ABOVE: Taken just moments before Bryan Wilson’s throat was torn open. Did we have any paranormal experiences? Indeed we did… but, that’s another story altogether. I was honored to be an invited guest at the first Famous Monsters Convention this past week (see previous blog for event coverage) and I am equally honored to be a part of the new book CINEMASSACRES: A TRIBUTE TO FORREST J. ACKERMAN. Forry Ackerman started it all for me when I first discovered his Famous Monsters Of Filmland Magazine many years ago, as a child. I’m pleased to be able to pay tribute to him in this book that features interviews with myself, Don Calfa (RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD), Muse Watson (I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER), director Fred Olen Ray, Courtlandt Hull (WITCH’S DUNGEON MUSEUM), Boris Karloff’s daughter Sara, director Jim Wynorski, and many more.

This book is available now and you can easily pick up a copy on Amazon at:
http://www.amazon.com/Cinemassacres-Tribute-Forrest-J-Ackerman/dp/1593935447/ref=cm_cmu_up_thanks_hdr

Thanks for reading,
Jim
www.JimORear.com

Jim O'Rearhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17727815563163634378noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-750548275088282661.post-66193623821715022642010-07-13T18:28:00.000-07:002010-07-14T02:44:33.597-07:00Fun With FAMOUS MONSTERS!
HELLO, FRIENDS…

ABOVE: Bryan Wilson (UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT), Jim O’Rear (DAY OF THE DEAD), and Mike Christopher (DAWN OF THE DEAD) walk the red carpet at the Famous Monsters Convention.

Famous Monsters was the horror magazine that I grew up with. It really shaped my love of the genre, so it was a great thrill to be invited as a guest to their first convention in Indianapolis. It was three days packed with excitement. So much excitement, in fact, that it’s going to be tough fitting it into a short blog… but, here we go!

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear and Bryan Wilson prepare to enter the Famous Monsters Convention.

I arrived Friday morning with my friend, Bryan Wilson, and my son, Brandon. From the interstate you could already see that monsters had taken over the convention hotel. Sitting atop the Wyndham was a giant, inflatable Godzilla and King Kong. Childhood memories of how fun Famous Monsters Magazine was immediately flooded my mind.

ABOVE: Hollywood Ghost Hunters team members in attendance… Steve Nappe (JASON X), Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN, HATCHET 2), Kane Hodder (FRIDAY THE 13TH, HATCHET), and Jim O’Rear (THE DEAD MATTER).

Upon entering we were immediately greeted by being flipped a bird by Kane “Jason” Hodder (FRIDAY THE 13TH, HATCHET), then quickly teased about the portable green screen we were carrying by Tom Savini (FROM DUSK TIL DAWN, PLANET TERROR), followed by affectionately being called “Muther Fu**ers” by Joe “Rhodes” Pilato (DAY OF THE DEAD). Yes, we were among “our people.”

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear outside the entrance to the Hall Of The Living Dead.

After checking in we were shown where my table for the weekend would be… appropriately inside the Hall Of The Living Dead room. What a great room this was… filled with the stars from NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (Judith O’Dea, Kyra Schon, Bill Hinzman, John Russo, Russ Streiner, Charles Craig, and more), DAWN OF THE DEAD (Tom Savini, Leonard Lies, Jim Krut, Mike Christopher, Sharon Ceccatti, and more), DAY OF THE DEAD (Me, Joe Pilato, Gary Klar, Terry Alexander, Michael Gornick, and more), and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (Beverly Randolph, Thom Matthews, Allan Trautman, Don Calfa, Jewel Shepard, Brian Peck, and John Philbin).

ABOVE: Joe “Rhodes” Pilato (DAY OF THE DEAD), Jim O’Rear, Bryan Wilson, and Gary “Steele” Klar (DAY OF THE DEAD).

ABOVE: The cast of RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD.

We also had acting legend William Forsythe (DEVIL’S REJECTS, HALLOWEEN, RAISING ARIZONA) in our room, whom I had the pleasure of sitting next to all weekend. Along with visiting with William Forsythe and the DEAD films cast members I also had some time to chat with Ernie Hudson (GHOSTBUSTERS, THE CROW), Tony Todd (CANDYMAN, TRANSFORMERS), Terrance Zdunich (REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA), Cerina Vincent (CABIN FEVER, POWER RANGERS), artist Billy & Heather Tackett, Shannon Sylvia (GHOST HUNTERS INTERNATIONAL), director George Demick, and briefly ran into Bridget Marquardt (GIRLS NEXT DOOR) before the show activities began.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear, Cernia Vincent (CABIN FEVER), and Bryan Wilson.

ABOVE: Bryan Wilson, Ernie Hudson (GHOSTBUSTERS), and Jim O’Rear.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear and Bill Hinzman (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD).

There were a ton of activities to participate in on Friday, including a beauty contest, Charles Band’s Full Moon Roadshow, film screenings, and panels. G Tom Mac also performed, best known for his song “Cry Little Sister” from LOST BOYS. And, of course, you could shop the dealer room for horror collectibles and get autographs from the actors. Other genre personalities that were very common to run into include the cast of vampires from THE LOST BOYS, Billy Drago (THE UNTOUCHABLES, THE HILLS HAVE EYES), director Mick Garris (SLEEPWALKERS, THE STAND, MASTERS OF HORROR), Miko Hughes (PET SEMATARY), Bela Lugosi Jr., Alex Vincent (CHILD’S PLAY), and Rupert from SURVIVOR, just to name a few more.

ABOVE: Bela Lugosi Jr & Jim O’Rear.

ABOVE: Shannon Sylvia (GHOST HUNTERS INTERNATIONAL) makes Bryan Wilson her bitch.

Everyone was starved when Friday came to a close so we organized a dinner away from the hotel where we were joined by Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN), William Forsythe (DEVIL’S REJECTS), Cerina Vincent (CABIN FEVER), artist Billy & Heather Tackett, and several other personal friends. It was controlled chaos that kept things fun all day.

ABOVE: Bryan Wilson, Tony Todd (CANDYMAN), and Jim O’Rear.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear is trapped in a contraption from SAW.

ABOVE: Bryan Wilson and Jim O’Rear flank a pesky Predator.

ABOVE: Some of the many lovely critters to be found with Charles Band and the gang from FULL MOON.

Wanting to get out of the hotel for a few minutes for a late lunch, we grabbed Terrance “Grave Robber” Zdunich (REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA) and ran down to a local pizza joint. I was originally approached by Executive Producer Don Babb about 8 months ago, after he read my book. He was interested in possibly putting together a documentary and having me direct it. But, I make features. What do I know about documentaries? Needless to say, I was a bit intimidated by the offer.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear directs Sebrina Siegel in front of Andrew Jackson’s historic home, The Hermitage.

After wrapping my head around the project and getting an idea of what I wanted to do, I called my friend and frequent co-star Debbie Rochon to see if she would be interested in hosting. Debbie has always been a fan of the paranormal but has never had the opportunity to actually be involved in it. I also felt Sebrina Siegel would be a great co-host, as she is wonderful in front of the camera and would lend a nice contrast to Debbie’s style. Bryan and I produced, shot, and edited a television show together for three years (UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT) and were very comfortable with each other’s style. I knew having Bryan on board as a partner and DP would help things move along quickly and smoothly.

ABOVE: Bryan Wilson sets up a shot inside the world famous Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge.

After nailing down a script, locations, and an opening in everyone’s schedule it was time to go to work. The cast and crew never complained, never lost focus, and never gave in to anything that was thrown at them…except once, when some restless spirits terrified Sebrina so badly that she had to leave the location. However, even this was good because it provided some great footage as well as some fantastic memories for her.

Debbie Rochon studies lines in the Mt Olivet Cemetery.

I’d like to thank the entire cast and crew for their hard work and dedication to this project, as well as the property owners who allowed us to invade their land and all of our special guests. Yes, I’m talking about attendees at the HUGE A-Kon Convention, the oldest, continually running anime-based convention in North America. Celebrating its 21st year, A-Kon hosted anime fans and guests and offered other items of interest ranging from gaming to independent film. Oh yeah… did I mention that it was HUGE?

ABOVE: Our hotel! Nothing says home like classical sculptures, industrial architecture, and hard liquor!

I was excited to appear as a guest at A-Kon this year as I was relatively unfamiliar with modern anime and wanted to experience something new. My son, however, knows everything about anime, so he accompanied me to Dallas to be my guide and help me ease into the culture shock I was about to experience.

ABOVE: I didn’t think I’d see anything horror related during this trip until I came across this school. Looks like a set from a really creepy film!

Arriving in Dallas on Thursday, we were promptly greeted at the airport by an A-Kon staff member who whisked us through the downtown traffic and to the front door of the event hotel. From there we were briskly ushered to guest services and handed a packet of supplies, including badges, schedules, restaurant information, maps of the location, special guest invitations to events, hotel room keys, and more. It was great… no checking in at the hotel or wading through fans to get our guest materials. Everything was prepared and ready for us upfront. I could tell, already, that I was going to like this show!

ABOVE: Costumed anime fans await the start of the convention.

Walking downstairs to scope out where my guest table was, we noticed about 200 hundred people who were already standing in line to get tickets… and the show wasn’t even officially starting until the following morning. That didn’t matter to these die-hard fans, though, who came a day early to party… 95% of them dressed in costume!

ABOVE: Rounding the corner in my hotel, I stepped into a hallway that looked like it came right out of the film PHANTASM!

After locating my table, it was time for some dinner. I checked the schedule to see when I’d be needed Friday and noticed that the show opened at 8am. I thought that was a little strange, as most shows I appear at don’t even get rolling until late afternoon on a Friday. Would there actually be people in attendance that early on Friday? My question was answered after dinner when I returned to the convention center to find several hundred more costumed people hanging out. It appeared as if there would be hundreds flooding the show first thing in the morning.

ABOVE: A young lady models some Japanese fashion.

My thoughts were confirmed when my son and I reported to the show Friday morning. The doors opened with a bang as hundreds of fans rushed into the center ready to meet their favorite voice actors, participate in panels, listen to concerts, watch movies, and buy merchandise…most of which had been imported from Japan. Oh, and did I mention that 95% were in costume?? Here are a few:

ABOVE: Mushrooms and Poison Ivy could make a powerful concoction!

ABOVE: ?????

ABOVE: Go, Speed Racer! As more and more people came through the doors, the convention center’s mechanical items began to break down. It wasn’t long, at all, before several of the elevators and escalators no longer worked from the strain of thousands of people constantly on them. As a matter of fact, sometimes the line just to get on the elevator was as long as the line to get into the building. Needless to say, we got our exercise climbing stairs all weekend, as the convention spanned 3 different floors of the convention center.

ABOVE: This was the view of the escalators… 24/7.

Highlights for Friday included panels on drawing anime, auditioning for anime, publishing, creating characters, RPGs, and more. I gave a panel on acting and performing stunts in film for the attendees and took some time out to attend my friend’s (Robert “Lord Zedd” Axelrod, POWER RANGERS, AKIRA, STAR TREK VOYAGER) funny and informative panel on voice acting techniques, which was also hosted by Kyle Hebert (DRAGONBALL Z, BLEACH, NARUTO) and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (COWBOY BEBOP, GHOST IN THE SHELL, DIRGE OF CEREBUS).

ABOVE: Kyle Hebert, Robert Axelrod, and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn host a voice actor panel.

After my panel on acting and stuntwork, I was challenged to a Pixie Stick shooter contest by Schmitty. I’m not one to turn down a challenge, but since I’m hypoglycemic and can’t eat sugar… my son, Brandon, stepped up to the plate.

ABOVE: Brandon O’Rear and Schmitty battle it out in a Pixie Stick shooter challenge.

As Friday evening came attendees gathered for various nighttime activities. One of those was an impromptu dance-off contest held on the main floor of the convention center. Also, shenanigans were afoot at the opening ceremonies, which included a hilarious short film by Anthony Brownrigg (FULL METAL ALCHEMIST) that was made just for the show.

ABOVE: Dancers square off in an impromptu dance contest.

ABOVE: Anthony Brownrigg clowns it up on stage in a penguin costume during opening ceremonies.

After dinner it was time for a concert by Inugami Circus-dan, from Japan. Formed in 1994, they are one of the longest running Visual Kei bands and even started their own fashion trend in Japan with their style of dress… which is a mixture of Kimonos, military-styled uniforms, and painted faces (like clowns). Unfortunately, photography was not allowed during the concert, but they rocked the house. It didn’t matter that all of the lyrics were in Japanese, the music spoke for itself. Since I couldn’t photograph the band, here are a few more cool pictures of costumed fans:

ABOVE: A creepy Geisha dressed very much like Inugami Kyoko from the band Inugami Circus-dan.

ABOVE: LEFT 4 DEAD zombies, anyone?

ABOVE: ?????

Following Inugami Circus-dan, the band Seikima II took the stage. This band can best be described as the Japanese version of Kiss. Clothed in wild costumes and with each member sporting an individual character makeup, this five-man rock and roll explosion tore up the stage in their first American appearance. Unfortunately, no photographs were allowed, again. So, in their place I offer you this picture of cute cat people:

ABOVE: NOT Seikima II.

As if that wasn’t enough activity for one day, a midnight screening of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW with shadow cast couldn’t be missed. This was the first time my son had the opportunity to see the film with a live audience and we had a blast throwing toast, toilet paper, and cards, spraying water, snapping rubber gloves, screaming at the screen, dancing in the isles to The Time Warp, and more. The shadow cast was great and they constantly kept energy pumping through the room.

ABOVE: Members of the ROCKY HORROR shadow cast dance the night away on stage.

ABOVE: Hijinx ensue as Frank-n-Furter strolls through the ROCKY HORROR audience.

ABOVE: Riff Raff and Magenta come to take everyone back to Transylvania during THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.

Saturday morning came extremely early… especially after only a few hours of sleep. That didn’t stop the thousands of fans from streaming into the show at 8am. More panels, anime film screenings, activities, shopping, and costume contests were lined up to keep everyone busy. We got to spend a few more minutes with Robert Axelrod (THE BLOB, DIGIMON, FIST OF THE NORTHSTAR) in between waves of people, I hosted a panel on independent filmmaking, and we briefly ran into Jonathan Joss (KING OF THE HILL, CHARMED, WALKER TEXAS RANGER).

ABOVE: Robert “Lord Zedd” Axelrod (POWER RANGERS) and Brandon O’Rear.

ABOVE: Brandon O’Rear mans the “Jim O’Rear Table,” trying to convince people that he is me!

Of course there were plenty of costumes to enjoy. A wide range of topics were discussed, including Virgil’s secret greens recipe which involves smoked turkey wings… not bacon… smoked turkey wings… not bacon… smoked turkey wings… If you run into Virgil somewhere, ask him about it, then you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear with Deep Roy (CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, STAR TREK, CORPSE BRIDE, PLANET OF THE APES, TRANSFORMERS).

Upon returning to the hotel we noticed that the parking lot was flooded with people. Elvis was alive… sorta. In true Tennessee fashion, an Elvis impersonator was entertaining the crowd… singing and shaking his hips to all of The King’s classics. We laughed… but in all fairness, he was actually pretty good.

ABOVE: Elvis puts on a show in the hotel parking lot.

ABOVE: Elvis and Jim O’Rear.

The next day of the show was full of events and celebrity signings. I had the chance to take a brief break and cruise the vendor floor, which was loaded with goodies ranging from rare DVDs, collectible toys, T-Shirts, action figures, art prints, and more. They also had the time travel car from the Back To The Future movies on hand that you could have your photo taken in. I wish I had more time to look around the vendor floor but I’m afraid I would have spent A LOT of money if I had.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear with Jake “Anakin” Lloyd (STAR WARS, JINGLE ALL THE WAY).

That night the convention hosted a “Party With The Stars” event that consisted of drinking, dancing, and Karaoke. This was a blast and provided some sights I never thought I’d see in my life… some that were almost surrealistic. It was the second year for this show and there were a few snags and hitches along the way, but, being new, the event organizers are still learning the process.

ABOVE: Who the heck let the dinosaur in?

One of the big problems this show faced was the fact that it was divided up among several different venues. These venues weren’t within walking distance, either, which meant you had to catch a shuttle that ran every half an hour if you wanted to see vendors and events located in every location. This created confusion and some frustration, especially on Sunday when the shuttle didn’t run at all. One of the venues used was the McWane Center, which is a children’s hands-on museum in downtown Birmingham. In theory, this was supposed to create cross-traffic for the Imagicon event, bringing in museum patrons who may not have known the convention was happening on the upper levels of the museum. Unfortunately, young children are not necessarily the patrons you want to target for this particular type of event.

ABOVE: Daniel Taylor (RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING) plays with one of the exhibits inside the McWane Center.

The show opened on Friday and after wading through hundreds of small, screaming children… who were at the museum for a school field trip… I made it to my table to set up. The celebrity guests were all located in one room of the museum and I was pleased to be sharing the space with Gil Gerard (BUCK ROGERS), Erin Gray (BUCK ROGERS, SILVER SPOONS), Bonita Friedericy (CHUCK, ANGEL), John Billingsly (TRUE BLOOD, STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE), Daniel Taylor (RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING), zombie artist Billy Tackett, writers Timothy Zahn, Sean Taylor, Bobbie Nash, and many more.

ABOVE: Gil Gerard (BUCK ROGERS) and Jim O’Rear.

ABOVE: Erin Gray (BUCK ROGERS, SILVER SPOONS) and Jim O’Rear.

Attendance was small on Friday, but we all made the best of it and had a good time. It allowed many of us to visit with each other and play around in the museum. During some of this free time, Kevin from Macabre Mansion (www.macabremansion.com) stopped by my table. He was there to cover the show and had interviews planned with some of the guests. As many of my friends know, I’m often asked by Macabre Mansion to be a guest interviewer for their internet show. I always enjoy doing this for my friends at M.M. and Kevin asked if I’d be willing to do it again. So, we headed off to film and record interviews with Gil Gerard, Erin Gray, Bonita Fredericy, and John Billingsly, where we discussed such things as Gil Gerard’s detachable penis, John Billingsly’s frequent romps in the nude, Bonita Fredericy’s secret lust for myself and Zach Levi, and much more. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled on M.M.’s website to watch these hilarious interviews when they are posted.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear interviews Gil Gerard, Erin Gray, Bonita Fredericy, and John Billingsly for MACABRE MANSION.

Saturday provided stronger attendance but it was tough to get a read on how many attendees there were due to the various venues that had people scattered throughout the city. Many events took place on Saturday, including film screenings, Q&A panels, costume contests, and more. I spotted several varied and cool costumes throughout McWane Center, although my favorite was the very simple Elphaba. I’m not sure why I’ve had a lifelong fascination with Elphaba, the Wicked Witch, but… there she was!

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear sporting a WICKED shirt checks out the convention with Elphaba.

Speaking of costumes… here are a few more I enjoyed seeing…

Fun stuff! Daniel Taylor and I were scheduled to lead a panel on the art of independent filmmaking which, unfortunately, was located in a different venue than where our tables were, but it allowed us the opportunity to see a little more of the show. The panel discussion was held at Old Car Heaven, which is also where most of the anime was located. A few people attended the panel where we got to share good and bad stories about filmmaking and acting in independent movies.

ABOVE: Everything was going along swimmingly until a giant fish came out of nowhere and ate Daniel!

The convention also hosted a screening of my movie OLD HABITS DIE HARD (featuring myself, Kane “Jason” Hodder, Tricia Cast, Roger Hewlett, and Stacey Dixon) on Saturday. Unfortunately, due to poor planning, the screening was held in an open area right alongside a very loud Rock Band contest… so, sounds of the movie and sounds of the bands constantly fought each other and clashed the entire time, making it very difficult to enjoy either of those events.

ABOVE: The Rock Band contest takes place on stage!

Sunday was another slow day, allowing us additional opportunities to find our own entertainment and ways that we could get into trouble. My friends from Macabre Mansion asked if I would conduct another interview for them with zombie artist Billy Tackett (www.BillyTackett.com) while we had some free time. Watch for this one on the M.M. website soon, too. Daniel and Ami Taylor and I used some of the downtime to start filming a humorous short “fish out of water” film based on characters we previous created in another feature. More info about these shenanigans will come at a later time. Bonita Friedericy and John Billingsly used some of their downtime to play a prank on Gil Gerard and Erin Gray. I won’t tell you what it was because these two pranksters will probably want to do it to someone else in the future… so, if you attend a con where Bonita and John are guests, keep an eye on them for some funny stuff!

ABOVE: Daniel Taylor sets fire to the McWane Center while testing his new super powers.

Although Imagicon is new and had some hiccups, the event organizers put forth their best efforts. It was a small, but fun, show that I hope is able to grow in the future.

Thanks for reading,
Jim
www.JimORear.com

Jim O'Rearhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17727815563163634378noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-750548275088282661.post-79838575347248331982010-05-11T04:33:00.000-07:002010-05-11T04:58:01.516-07:00Be Part Of A Movie!!!
You can be part of UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT: THE MOVIE!!

UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT, a wacky documentary featuring some of your favorite horror and sci-fi celebrities, is using Kickstarter to raise completion funds in exchange for some cool prizes!

Please check out our Kickstarter page to learn more about this opportunity and pass along the following link to all of your friends! This was the first time I’ve ever shot two different films on the same day, in the same location, and wearing the same wardrobe! It was great, from an actor’s standpoint, to not have to go through the extra changes, makeup, or location moves.

ABOVE: Portrait of a dysfunctional family in DEATH WOODS.

First on the slate was DEATH WOODS, by first-time filmmaker Scott Conner. In this traditional slasher-style film, Debbie Rochon and I play the dysfunctional parents of the child who grows up to be the killer in the film. It’s an ugly, angry piece that, unfortunately, mirrors a lot of real families in the community today.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear is NOT happy with Debbie Rochon’s attitude in DEATH WOODS.

DEATH WOODS has just begun production so it will be awhile before the end product in available, but I’ll keep you updated on this one.

ABOVE: Could this cuddly little child grow up to become the vicious killer in DEATH WOODS?

Next on the slate…. THE ZOMBIE MOVIE, a new flick from Jason Crowe and Roni Jonah. This is, traditionally, one of the most fun conventions of the year and the 2010 show did not disappoint.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear, Terrance “Graverobber” Zdunich (REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA, and Daniel Taylor (RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING).

The show started for me on Thursday night when my friend Terrance “Graverobber” Zdunich (REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA) flew into town early. We grabbed some dinner and caught up before both of us had to take off to other meetings planned for the night. One of those meetings, for me, was with a friend I hadn’t seen in probably 17 years, Bryan Wilson. Bryan was a co-producer with me on a television show we created 20 years ago (UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT) that ran for a couple of years in various markets. Being the 20 year anniversary… it was time to “get the band back together,” as Jake or Elwood might say. We were going to use the Full Moon convention to start working on a new documentary about the television show, appropriately titled UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT: THE MOVIE, and film as much as possible between convention events. But, I digress… more about this film in a different blog at a later time.

ABOVE: Caroline Williams (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2) Finds A New Toy To Play With.

This year’s event included appearances by Dee Snider (TWISTED SISTER, STRANGELAND), Scout Taylor Compton (ROB ZOMBIE’S HALLOWEEN), a TEXAS CHAINSAW 2 reunion with Caroline Williams, Bill Moseley, and Bill Johnson, Scream Queen Debbie Rochon, Ari “Jason” Lehman (FRIDAY THE 13TH), Richard “Jason” Brooker (FRIDAY THE 13TH 3), Terrance Zdunich (REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA), Daniel Taylor (RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING), horror artist Billy Tackett, Doug “Pinhead” Bradley and Ashley Laurence (HELLRAISER), Ken Foree (DAWN OF THE DEAD, DEVIL’S REJECTS), wrestling legend Al Snow, and many more. Of course, as usual, the event also included lots of tattoos and horror film screenings.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear, Ari “Jason” Lehman (FRIDAY THE 13TH), and Bryan Wilson.

Before the show began, Bryan and I sat down for lunch with Ari Lehman (FRIDAY THE 13TH) and the always pleasant Robert Logue (CYPOCRYPHY), swapping funny stories… especially one where Ari gave us the TRUE history of Jason Voorhees (watch for more in UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT). The ramp-up to events on Friday is a nice, even build which allows you, as a guest, to get settled in and have a chance to greet old friends (thank you for the BIG hello hug, Ashley Laurence!). David Polk, another member of the UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT cast/crew, helped man the table as we greeted show attendees and began filming the documentary.

ABOVE: Dee Snider (STRANGELAND), Jim O’Rear, and Debbie Rochon (AMERICAN NIGHTMARE).

After a hectic Friday, it was time to unwind. And, what better place than Waffle House!!! Yes… in honor of Gunnar Hansen (a die-hard W.H. fan)… Bryan Wilson, Daniel and Ami Taylor, Billy and Heather Tackett, and myself went to grab a late-night snack. Before crashing for the night, however, we were treated by Daniel Taylor rapping out his favorite Lil Jon song and, I must say, Daniel has mad skills!

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear with the cast from TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2… Bill “Leatherface” Johnson, Caroline “Stretch” Williams, and Bill “Chop Top” Moseley.

Saturday we woke up to weather reports of severe thunderstorms and tornados. Great! When were these storms predicted to hit Nashville? Exactly when the show was scheduled to open for the day! Great, again! Although the storms did sweep through during the day, they weren’t all that bad… only leaving us without power for about 1.5 hours. The blackout may sound like a bad thing, but it gave convention attendees the rare opportunity to be in a dark room with Pinhead, Leatherface, and Jason… a nightmare come true, for some!

ABOVE: Scout Taylor Compton taunts Ken Foree (DAWN OF THE DEAD) with her artwork, which demands he dance!

One of the events scheduled on Saturday was a screening of REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA (a brilliant film, if you haven’t seen it already) with a live shadow cast… as in the tradition of ROCKY HORROR. This event was packed and they had to bring in more chairs from the hotel to seat the crowd. Gotta love REPO!

ABOVE: Bryan Wilson, Daniel Taylor, and Jim O’Rear are THE TRINITY OF PAIN.

As things got goofier during the day it was time for the Trinity Of Pain to make their Full Moon debut. The Trinity (a trio of characters created for a future show) consists of Arch Bishop Bryan (Bryan Wilson), Reverend Jim (myself), and Rabbi D (Daniel Taylor) who go forth and help you with your personal problems… whether you want their help or not! Shenanigans ensued once the Trinity arrived on the scene (of course this was filmed for UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT, as well). Here are a few photos from the Trinity’s brief appearance at the Full Moon show…

ABOVE: The Trinity try to drive the demon from actress/model Stacey Dixon’s body.

ABOVE: The Trinity kidnap Scout Taylor Compton (ROB ZOMBIE’S HALLOWEEN)

ABOVE: Caroline Williams (TEXAS CHAINSAW 2) wants to know what’s under skirt!

ABOVE: The Trinity are available to save wrestling legend Al Snow.

ABOVE: The Trinity interrupt Sideshow Bennie’s show, as his material was objectionable in their eyes.

ABOVE: The Trinity loves zombies!

It was a full day of film screenings, tattooing, performances by Sideshow Bennie and Aron Houdini, belly dancers, costume contests, tattoo contests, and more. Several of us went to the bar to hang out for awhile, including Terrence Zdunich, Al Snow, Daniel and Ami Taylor, Billy and Heather Tackett, Bryan Wilson, David Polk, the fine folks from Macabre Mansion, and others, and were met there by Ken Foree and Scout Taylor Compton who were, of all things, discussing strip clubs! Al Snow entertained us with knowledge he’s collected over the years about women… making sure that my son, Brandon (whom Al refers to as his “traveling companion Bucky”), understood all of the complexities involved. This brought about loads of much needed laughter after a busy day on the convention floor.

ABOVE: Ken Foree (DAWN OF THE DEAD)… new spokesperson for Chop Top!

Sunday (known as “The Hangover Day” among conventioneers) allowed us to shoot more footage for UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT: THE MOVIE (with brilliant performances delivered from Caroline Williams, Scout Taylor Compton, Bill Johnson, Jeff Preston, Ari Lehman, Terrance Zdunich, Daniel Taylor, Doug Bradley, Al Snow, and many others). Debbie Rochon and I also did an interview with Macabre Mansion. The day flew by, bringing with it lots of fun.

ABOVE: Daniel Taylor (RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING) does his Highlander impression.

Unfortunately, all good things must end. I’d like to thank Ben & Stacey Dixon for asking me to appear at their show again this year. It’s always a great time and a wonderful show! Extra special thanks to Bill Dever, Jeff Burr, Joe Gaudin, Kayla Gill, Ervin Ross, Shay Baker, Jordan Paley, Jessica Winchell, Dale Capellanio, and Daniel Emery Taylor for making this shoot such a fun and enjoyable experience.

ABOVE: Someone got an extra dose of “crazy” in their cornflakes!

RESURRECTION is a story about genetically modified corn that causes a town to go crazy. When a couple of college kids return home over the Easter holiday weekend, they find themselves caught up in a world gone mad. The film features Kayla Gill, Ervin Ross, and Shay Baker as the kids fighting for their lives against a town full of crazies. I play Dr. Tim Neilson, a scientist who uncovers the genetic plot and tries to stop the epidemic before it spreads further… kinda like the “Dr. Loomis” character from HALLOWEEN. The film also features the legendary Richard Lynch (INVASION USA, ROB ZOMBIE’S HALLOWEEN, BAD DREAMS) and a special appearance by Lloyd Kaufman.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear and Richard Lynch.

This was a long, hard shoot with constant weather changes from hot to freezing to tornadoes… making it extremely difficult to schedule shots. No matter, though, the cast and crew hung together and made every situation work. One of the primary keys to filmmaking is flexibility and everyone on this cast and crew adapted quickly to anything that was thrown at them.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear gets Steve Christopher a bit messy!

ABOVE: The cast and crew work under very windy conditions while completing a highly dramatic scene.

It was a pleasure to have my good friend Daniel Emery Taylor (RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING) join me on set. Dan is always great to be around. Although Daniel and I have been in several of the same films, we rarely get to work on screen together. However, RESURRECTION allowed us the rare opportunity to share some screen time in a really fun scene.

ABOVE: Jim O’Rear and Daniel Emery Taylor clown around between set-ups.

ABOVE: Uh Oh… Daniel Emery Taylor may be screwed!

I want to thank the entire cast and crew for their kindness, dedication, and teamwork that contributed to this being a great project.
